Re: An excellent list of logical fallacies
Formal and Informal Logic was a key part of my adult education, and for that I will always be grateful.
But I am even more grateful that the course of my life took me along a path where critical thinking, and the direct study of critical thinking and logical analysis became the central focus of my life for nearly six years. It truly was a sort of life transforming kind of experience to devote that much focus to the study of how to think and reason cautiously and - even more importantly - how to recognize and identify cognitive biases. Cognitive biases, in my opinion, are even more critical to understand than informal logical fallacies. While there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element, I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free. -Eugene V. Debs |

Re: An excellent list of logical fallacies
Hey, that's great! I'm going to print and laminate one copy for work and one for home.

Re: An excellent list of logical fallacies
Word to the wary- while these are errors in formal logic (and people might be called on them in organized forensics) -many are highly useful and effective rhetorical tools in real life situations.
One should be prepared to deal with them- and use them from time to time, as the case may warrant. IRL, our minds don't work like a Vulcan's. Re: An excellent list of logical fallacies
on the other hand. there are some using fallacies to discredit other people. ironically this tactic is a fallacy in itself. especially since its almost impossible to have a conversation without accidentally using or saying at least one fallacy.
its one of those concepts that everyone can agree on: but no one can do. |

Exactly.
Not only do you and WILL you use them- but the persuasive person learns where and when they're gut grabbing and effective. The real world ain't high school or collegiate debate. So we're fucked and there's no use debating anything.
