Fed's reassurance, earnings optimism lift global shares

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares gained on Thursday, retaining positive momentum as the Federal Reserve reassured markets that it will keep its very accommodative stance to support growth, and optimism grew over strong corporate earnings after Apple Inc's robust results.

I was just thinking tonight. In the past, whenever construction started up around town, it mean that the recession was over. It was just that simple. Everything would ease up, people could get jobs, people would spend money and everything was okay again. This held whether the recession was big or small. Not this time, though. I drive around downtown and there is construction everywhere I look, but unemployment hasn't budged. We are sitting at just under 9% (the "official" number). I assume that construction employment must be up, but something else must be down to keep unemployment this high. We are not as bad off as some places, but this recession has been going on since 2000 here.
