These things are determined by the developers of the platforms. This wasn't something we were concerned about when choosing the new platform. It wouldn't be an issue if we didn't suddenly have a rash of very long subject lines. I think the easiest thing to do is ditch the quick reply feature in your user CP. Not only does that make it easy to shorten the subject line, it gives you all the formatting options.

Although what you say is certainly true, the reason I like quick reply is that if the OP is two pages long, then I am not repeating those two pages.

And neither are the next twelve responders. Some people know how to go in and <snip> the text they are replying to, but other people don't. The discussion forum then becomes filled with filler.

Just hit "New Reply" instead of "Quick Reply" -- this does not quote other posts and allows the subject line to be changed, along with showing all the formatting options and smilies.
